Cutting the Cable Cord, Continued- The Rest of the Boxes

Did you check out my last post on getting rid of cable? If not, check that out first. You won't regret it!

Initially we discovered PlayOn, and thought that it would make all of our free TV show dreams come true. Not so. Despite all sorts of upgrades to the desktop, and even taking it to a repair shop (which confirmed that we had all the requirements to properly run the program), the feed was choppy at best. So disappointing! This of course doesn't mean it won't work for you, but it didn't for us. Poop.

Fortunately, not all was lost. Thus far we've had good times with Netflix and Amazon Prime, and have barely even scratched the surface of all the good stuff available from Roku. I'm still researching ways to get more CBS shows on Roku, which I'll update you on later!

Our other TV sets are older, and one is used pretty rarely. The other one I use pretty regularly, but I'm more easily entertained than my dear husband! We got two sets of the Roku LT Streaming Player (around $50) for those television sets, and since we now have a bajillion devices on our wireless internet, we upgraded that as well. My husband went and bought the new wireless internet device without consulting me, so we probably got ripped off on that. Grrr!

Still, while there is an initial investment, it will pay off for years and years to come! I would much rather pay $20 or less per month for my entertainment versus $60. Wouldn't you?

5 Boxes of Green Tea for Under $2!

I purchased the Roland Green Tea Bags (50 Tea Bags), 3.7500-Ounce (Pack of 5) a few weeks back for around $5, and THAT was a great deal, but this is amazing!

This isn't organic green tea, and it's not flavored like more expensive brands, but it's perfect for making any cleaning solutions with green tea, and great to drink with a couple drops of vanilla flavoring. My mother adds flavored creamer to hers.

This deal won't last long as there are only a handful left!

Cutting the Cable Cord: How We're Saving Money on TV!

It's happening this week. *Cue Jaws music*

Forever. The cost shall be gone

*Dah dum*

No more cable/satellite bills for us! We're making the plunge into uncharted territory, and cutting the proverbial cord!

How'd you do it?

It's so much simpler than you would imagine. Or at least, that I imagined! First, we do have high-speed internet. This wouldn't work without it. We already subscribe to that, so no extra costs there.

We have three TVs, so we bought three Roku boxes. One is the Roku 2 XS 1080p Streaming Player. This one we placed in our living room, as it has wired (and wireless) capability. Currently it's going for a little under $100, but I was able to get one that had been opened but not used from Amazon for around $65. (Keeping an eye on things does work!)

We connected this Roku box with our old computer tower, so we have a beautiful blue wire streaming across the ceiling in our house. It will later be dropped through the walls. :)
My hubby was going to drive to town (30 miles or so) to a computer store to get a cable, but I bet him that I could get a much better deal than the $20-30 they would charge. And I did! The RiteAV - Cat5e Network Ethernet Cable - Blue - 100 ft. [Office Product] was less than seven bucks, and with Prime shipping was free! Yes, I am awesome.

Since I'd rather not bore you to death, I'll continue telling you all about our new cheap entertainment system over the next few days. So stay tuned!

I Miss My Cat Eye Sunglasses!

Granted, this may seem like an odd topic to write/think about, but darn it, I miss my cateye sunglasses! I used to have this incredibly adorable vintage pair that I got FREE when I picked up some garage sale leftovers I asked for on Craiglist. They were perfect!

But, alas, my astigmatism worsened and now I'm limited to my glasses if I want to be able to see well. Regardless, I decided to go surfing on Amazon for what they're offering now. Here are some of my favorite picks, all of which are eligible for Amazon Prime!

Meow! These Old School Cat Eye Sunglasses with Rhinestones In Red really are the cat's meow! Perfect with a little black dress and red strappy heels. *Drool* And they're just $6.50, regular $20!

If you're as in love leopard print as I am, you NEED these Oversized Vintage Inspired Super & Bold Retro Designer Cat Eye Sunglasses. They're not quite what I would consider to be cateye sunglasses, but they are still hot, and come with their own microfiber pouch to protect them from being scratched by your keys in your purse! They're currently on sale for $9.99, down from $30! Catch this deal while it lasts, ladies!

Okay, so these are NOT cat eye sunglasses, but they popped up in my search and made me giggle! These are Cateye Wayfarer Round Lens Retro Sunglasses Wm514 (black, uv400). Gangnam Style SUNGLASSES! Perfect for taking videos dancing to your fave (or not so fave) tune. At $9.50, that's a reasonable price for some fun and maybe even a gag gift!

I obviously got side-tracked, but that's the norm these days. If you decide to try out any of these sunglasses, I'd love to see a pic or video!

Scrratch Iphone App Review

As part of making ends meet and trying to at least make something good come out of all my downtime feeling crummy, I've been exploring tons of iPhone apps that pay you to do something or another. Some pay in cash, others in gift cards, and still others with entries in sweepstakes.

Since I have an iPhone 3GS with 8GB of memory, I'm starting off with one of the apps that I'm going to delete, Scrratch.

What I Like about Scrratch:
The premise is really cool for anyone who digs scratch-off tickets. (BTW, the real thing has latex in it, so avoid them if you have a latex allergy!) More than just your run-of-the-mill scratch and win or don't win iPhone app, you can actually make your own digital scratch cards with this program! It's super easy to both design your own scratch card and to play.

Perfect for deciding who should pay for dinner- and a whole lot more fun than drawing straws.

Theoretically companies can get it on the fun and raffle prizes off. Cool, huh?

What I Dislike about Scrratch:

Well, sorta cool. The only commonly available scratch off is the practice one. Evidently companies haven't caught on to Scrratch yet.

Thanks to all my allergies and sensitivities, I can't go anywhere aside from one friend's house and doctors, so I personally have no use for the option to make your own scratch card.

The Verdict: 3/5 heating pads up
Definitely one to check on again. You can check it out here.
